What is Maundy Thursday?

John 13:34 Love one another

This is the Thursday before Easter that commemorates the Last Supper. The word “Maundy” comes from Latin mandatum meaning “command”. The focus is a reminder of the commandment that Jesus gave His disciples at the last supper, referring to:
John 13:34
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”

He repeats this same commandment 2 more times:
John 15:12
“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

John 15:17
“These things I command you, that you love one another.”

This is a commandment from Jesus, not a suggestion or a request. He anticipated the difficulty we would have in fulfilling this commandment and provided the Helper, the Holy Spirit to empower us to love like Him –

John 14:15:17a
“If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—“the Spirit of truth,..

John 14:26
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

Let us pray and ask the Holy Spirit to enable us to love others who trust in Jesus as Messiah, the way He loved us!

Prayer: Holy Spirit please come fill me and baptize me with Your Presence and Power so that I can be empowered by Your help to love the way Jesus loved, abide and bear fruit the way He commanded us in His Word. Amen!
