SHEMA: Hearing That Leads to Obedience

SHEMA, Hear, Believe, Obey

At the center of Israel’s faith is a single, powerful word: Shema.
“Shema, Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad.”
(Deuteronomy 6:4 TLV)
Most translations render Shema as “hear,” but in the Hebrew mind, this word goes far deeper than simply listening. Shema means to hear with the intent to obey. It is not passive—it is responsive. It is not informational—it is transformational.
To shema is to listen attentively, to take in what is being said, and then to align your life accordingly.
This is why the Shema is immediately followed by a command:
“You shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”
(Deuteronomy 6:5 TLV)
True hearing produces love expressed through action.
Jesus echoes this same principle throughout His ministry:
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
(Matthew 11:15)
He is not calling for better hearing—He is calling for obedience. In the Kingdom of God, hearing and doing are inseparable. If we hear His Word but do not respond, we have not truly heard at all.
Shema challenges us to examine our response to God’s voice. Are we collecting truth, or are we being shaped by it?
To Shema is to surrender.
To Shema is to follow.
To Shema is to live what God has spoken.
