The Impact of Prophecy on the Church
New Testament prophecy is never to elevate the person speaking. Its purpose is always to strengthen the people listening.
God gives prophetic words because He loves His Church.
When we faithfully share those words, He uses them to build His people, encourage their faith, and draw them closer to Jesus.
Paul summarizes the primary purpose of prophecy in one of the foundational verses of the New Testament.
Prophecy Encourages the Church
1 Corinthians 14:3–4
“But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.”
Paul gives us three beautiful pictures of what healthy prophecy accomplishes.
Edification – It Builds Up
Greek: Oikodomē (G3619)
Literally, the word means to build a house.
Spiritually, it refers to building up another believer so they grow in Christian maturity, wisdom, holiness, and joy.
Healthy prophecy doesn’t tear people down.
It strengthens them.
It reminds people of who they are in Christ and encourages them to continue growing into His likeness.
Ask yourself:
Will these words help build this person stronger in their walk with Jesus?
Exhortation – It Urges Forward
Greek: Paraklēsis (G3874)
This word carries the idea of encouragement, urging someone onward, comforting, strengthening, and calling them toward God’s purposes.
Sometimes people simply need someone to remind them,
“Don’t quit.”
“God hasn’t forgotten you.”
“Keep trusting Him.”
Prophecy often becomes the Holy Spirit’s gentle encouragement to continue walking in faith.
Ask yourself:
Will these words encourage this person to keep following Jesus?
Comfort – It Brings Hope
Greek: Paramythia (G3889)
This speaks of calming, consoling, reassuring, and bringing hope to someone who is discouraged or hurting.

There are moments when people don’t need correction.
They simply need to know that God sees them.
One Spirit-inspired word can bring peace into an anxious heart, hope into suffering, and courage into discouragement.
Ask yourself:
Will these words leave this person with greater hope in Christ?
Prophecy Equips Believers
1 Timothy 4:14
“Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.”
Throughout Scripture we see prophetic ministry affirming, encouraging, and helping believers step into God’s calling.
Healthy prophecy helps believers recognize, embrace, and steward God’s work within them.
Prophecy Strengthens Us for Battle

1 Timothy 1:18
“This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare.”
Prophetic words are not simply encouraging moments.
They often become spiritual anchors.
When seasons become difficult, we can remember what God has spoken and continue walking in faith.
Timothy was told to war with the prophetic words he had received.
Prophecy remindes us of God’s faithfulness and calling in difficult seasons and sometimes we need to remember what God has already said more than we need to seek something new.
Prophecy Builds the Entire Church
1 Corinthians 14:31
“…for you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be encouraged.”
Notice Paul’s emphasis.
Everyone benefits.
The person giving the word grows.
The person receiving the word is encouraged.
Those listening are strengthened and learn how the Holy Spirit speaks.
Healthy prophecy doesn’t create spectators.
It builds a healthy, mature, encouraging community where every believer can participate in strengthening one another.
The Big Picture

When exercised biblically and with love, humility, and faith, prophecy becomes one of God’s beautiful gifts to His Church.
It…
- Builds up the believer.
- Encourages the weary.
- Comforts the hurting.
- Equips God’s people for their calling.
- Strengthens them to persevere.
- Builds the entire Body of Christ.
Ultimately, the goal of prophecy is not to draw attention to the person speaking.
Its purpose is to glorify Jesus by strengthening His people and helping them become more like Him.
